Day tour to Plovdiv
There’s a lot to love about Plovdiv: just ask the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Turks, all of whom fought to claim it as their own. Originally established by the Thracians around 5000 BC, Plovdiv was proclaimed the sixth-oldest city in the world, and while it’s not future-shy (it’s recently been named the European Capital of Culture for 2019), Bulgaria’s second city rightfully revels in its past.

Rila Monastery was founded in the 10th century by St John of Rila, a hermit canonized by the Orthodox Church. Destroyed by fire at the beginning of the 19th century, the complex was rebuilt between 1834 and 1862. A characteristic example of the Bulgarian Renaissance (18th–19th centuries), the monument symbolizes the awareness of a Slavic cultural identity following centuries of occupation.
